Sliding switch-carriage arrangements.- One of the separable portions of sliding-carriage switchgear is provided with removable plug members which are inserted in sockets on the movable gear so that when in position these sockets are connected to other sockets on the other switchgear portion by the double-ended plug members. Each plug comprises two relatively movable parts one of which carries the contacts while the other is secured to the switchgear. As shown in Fig. 1, the casing 6 of the movable switchgear has orifices 7, S to receive plug members engaging sockets 1, 2 corresponding to alternative connections. Each plug comprises two portions 11, 12 connected by a resilient portion 15 the part 11 terminating in a tapered contact 13 engaging a corresponding socket and the part 12 in a split pin 14 adapted to engage a socket on the fixed switchgear. Between a shoulder 18 on the portion 11 and an insulating bushing 17 carried by the containing tube 16 is interposed a spring 19. The outer tube 16 is secured to the gear by a bayonet-slot fastening, being provided with a flange 20 and projections 23 so arranged that after these projections have passed through slots 9 in the orifices 7, 8, Fig. 2, and the tube is rotated, the pressure exerted by the spring 19 holds the plug in position. In the modified form of plug shown in Fig. 3 the two portions of the plug are rigidly connected together, the outer end having two knifeblade contacts 24 and the inner end a tapered plug 13 with a pin 25 which engages a recess in the tapered socket to ensure correct engagement of the blades 24 with their co-operating clip contacts in the fixed switchgear structure. A further modification, Fig. 4, has the plug member rigidly secured within the containing tube 27, the spring 32 being interposed between a shouldered portion 28 of this tube and an internal flange 29 of the ring 32 carrying the projections 23.
