Gas, supplying by meter. - Prepayment gas- and similar meters, especially such as are described in Specification 171,445, are adapted to be set for use with coins of different value, such as a penny and a shilling. The coin-operated measuring wheel h, Fig. 1, drives a pinion i to rotate a sleeve nut l, Fig. 4, slidably passing therethrough and engaging a screwed spindle m. The sleeve l engages a forked plate n<1> which has a pin to actuate the value lever and is carried by a sliding rod n. The spindle m is rotated to close the valve by a meter shaft' o which drives a coupling sleeve m<3> free to rotate and slide on the spindle m. The sleeve m<3> carries a pinion m<2> which, when a penny is being used, is connected by a pair of dogs m<7> to a pinion m<1> on the spindle m. When a shilling is being used, the sleeve m<3> is slid to disengage the pinion m<2> from the dogs m<7> and to bring it into mesh with a pinion m<4> on a lay shaft which has a second pinion m<5> engaging the pinion m<1>. The sleeve m<3> is operated by a rod q carrying a forked lever to engage it and a pin q<1> for engagement in a slotted retaining plate q<2>. Coin action, thrust and multiple-coin.-A coin inserted through a slot c<1> in a stationary adjustable price-changing disc into a rotary carrier a depresses an arm f<3> of a lever f pivoted at a<1> in the carrier, thereby causing a tooth f<2> on the other arm f<1> of the lever to engage between crown teeth h<2> of the measuring wheel h. The lever f is formed with a movable part f<4> against a tail f<5> on which the coin acts. The part f<4> has a slot f<6> to slide on the pivot a<1> and is secured in position to be acted on either by a penny or a shilling by a screw entering one of two holes f<8>. Exchangeable levers for use with different coins may be employed or exchangeable intermediate levers adapted to be acted on by the coins and to co-operate with a lever which engages the measuring wheel.
