Abstract
519,639. Prepayment mechanism for meters. METERS, Ltd., and BROWN, R. T. Sept. 26, 1938, No. 27976. [Class 27] Comprises coin - freed prepayment mechanism for a gas or like meter wherein manual manipulation of a handle or knob applies a force tending to open the gas valve. actual opening movement however not taking place until a predetermined movement of the quantity wheel, preceded by insertion of a coin, has taken place. In the construction shown the spindle a of the operating handle s carries a pin or lug c engaging a pin h on an arm or lever i loosely mounted on the spindle, the outer end of the arm having a pin j connected by a spring to an arm on the gas valve spindle (not shown). Thus, whenever the handle s is rotated the spring is tensioned and an opening force applied to the gas valve arm. When no prepayment has been made the gas valve is held closed by a cam k pivoted on the spindle a and controlled by the quantity wheel g. A Geneva stop device m on the cam k is connected by a pinion not shown to a wheel n fixed to. the quantity wheel. Thus, when a coin is inserted and the quantity wheel rotated the cam k is rotated and its outer end moves away from the gas valve arm allowing the valve to be fully opened by the spring connected to the pin j. The effect is that, although the movement of the cam k may be quite slow the valve makes a 'rapid full-opening movement.
