Guided-skip hoists.-A hoist carried by a coal. ing staith 1 comprises a vertical trunk 16 in which a skip 21 moves automatically to convey the coal from a shoot 4 to the hold without breakage. The trunk 16 is suspended by ropes from a carriage 9 movable on cantilever beams 8 at the top of the staith, and the trunk may be raised or lowered by a winch 17. Vertical guideways for the trunk are secured to vertical girders 14 which extend from the carriage 9 to carriages 12 movable on lower cantilever beams 9 overhanging the quayside. The carriages 9, 12 may be moved in or out together by gearing. The trunk is pro vided with lateral doors to communicate with the adjustable shoot 4. The skip has hinged side doors 22<a>, 22<b> connected by links 23 and opened automatically when the skip reaches the open bottom end of the trunk and the links 23 strike on abutment 34, Fig. 2. The trunk may be cylindrical. The skip is counterbalanced by weights 29, Fig. 2, suspended on the ropes 24, and by jockey weights 33, Fig. 1, which rest on brackets at, different heights and are picked up in succession by the weights 29 as the loaded skip descends. The ropes pass over sheaves on a shaft 30 provided with a ratchet wheel and pawl by which the movement of the skip may be controlled.
