6699. Gavin, M. R. March 17. Staiths and elevated structures.-Apparatus for loading coal &c. into barges &c. comprises a structure h erected at the quay side, having vertical guides v for a counterweighted cage r provided with a tipping-platform s on to which trucks are run from the rails w. This cage is hoisted by winding-gear u, and the platform is tipped so that the contents of the truck passes down a shoot y into a skip a. The skip a is provided with drop doors to which are attached hoisting-cables z operated by a winding-gear z<3>. The skip moves in guides in a frame b carried by links c pivoted to a frame e, which can be rocked to-and-fro in the structure h by screw mechanism j. The frame b can be luffed up and down by cables o operated from the winding - gear q. When the skip is charged, the frames b, e are manipulated so that a ring m at the lower end of the frame b is adjacent to the desired dumping place. The skip is then lowered to rest upon the ring, whereupon further paying out of the cables z permits the drop doors to open and the contents of the skip to be discharged. Tipping-apparatus.-The tipping-platform s is pivoted at its forward end and is tipped by raising the cage r slightly above a trigger x, Fig. 4, and then lowering so that the trigger engages a hook x<1> on the platform s. The trigger x is normally projected by a spring x<2> but can be drawn out of action by a cord x<4> operated by a hand-lever x<3>.
