[Class 78 (iv)] A crane, derrick, or like lifting- apparatus is arranged to be slued automatically by the operation of hoisting the load. Fig. 1 shows a winding- rope passing round pulleys 14, 16 on the jib and post respectively, to a winding-drum 17. The slueing rope 19 passes from a sliding sleeve 20 on the hoisting-rope round the pulley 18 to a ground-anchor spaced laterally from the post. On raising the load, the stop 22 on the hoisting-rope engages and carries the sleeve 20 with it, thus shortening the length of the slueing-rope between the anchor and the pulley 18 and slueing the jib towards the anchor. In some cases a second rope shown in dotted lines may be passed round a pulley a furnished with a rope-grip and mounted at the foot of the post, thence passing to a hanging weight b on the post. The weight then takes up the slack as the jib is slued, but the rope-grip becomes effective to prevent movement in the reverse direction, thus maintaining the jib in the slued position. Fig. 3 shows a modification of the above arrangement for slueing to either side at will. Two pulleys 23 with rope-grips are mounted at opposite ends of a bar 24. By fixing either slueing rope 19 by hand-operation of the corresponding rope-grip, that rope becomes effective to cause slueing, while the other rope moves freely over its pulley and is kept taut by the weight 29. A spring may be incorporated in the slueing-rope to take up the shock occurring on the initial tension.
