Abstract
402,881. Derricks. CLARKE, CHAPMAN, & CO., Ltd., Victoria Works, Gatesheadon-Tyne, Durham, and MACFARLANE, G. T., 16a, Station Parade, Northwood, Middlesex. July 13, 1932, No. 19849. [Class 78 (iv).] In a derrick 10 which slues to either side from the mid-position, the standing ends 31, 32 of the slueing guys 28, 29, or the anchorages for their guide sheaves 33, or both, are in alignment with the derrick foot 11 and the guys are led to sheaves 27 or pennants slung on lateral arms 25, 26 on the derrick. As shown, the arms are pivoted on a collar 37 to turn in one direction only about axes parallel to the derrick, so that when the derrick is slued, one arm 26 remains perpendicular to the plane containing the derrick and the mast, and the other arm 25 turns into the plane containing the derrick and the guy 28 so as to reduce torque on the derrick. The ends of the arms 25, 25 are stayed from the top of the derrick by guys 42 including stretching screws or tensioning devices 44. The slueing guys are connected to the arms through spring devices 45. The slueing guys are led round sheaves 33 in alignment with the points 11, 31, 32 and are wound oppositely on barrels 35, 36 which rotate together. The load rope 20 and topping lift 15 are wound on drums 24, 19. The winch gear is described in Specification 404,158. The derrick may be slued whilst at any height, but with heavy loads the anchors 31, 32 and the sheaves 33 may be moved to other positions in alignment with the derrick foot 11. The topping mechanism may be operated with the derrick in any position athwartship without operating the slueing barrels. With the guy anchors placed symmetrically as shown, a grab or other load moves substantially in a vertical plane parallel to the ship's axis when the derrick is topped or lowered, and with the sheave 22 for the load rope suitably placed, the grab or load moves substantially in a horizontal path. Specification 354,235 is referred to.
