Abstract

114,154. Forbes, W. C., and Forbes, D. Jan. 11, 1917, [Convention date]. Overhead travellers and transporters; trollies for runways; jib cranes.-A transporter for loading coal, grain, ores, and general merchandise into trucks, bins, and ships' holds comprises a trolly 19 running on an arm 15 which, when in use, is maintained horizontal and at right-angles to an arm 4 slidably mounted on a vertical pillar 1. The arm 15 is connected by a vertical pivot 16 to a shoe. 7 which is traversed along the arm 4 by a screw 8 rotated through bevel gears 11, 12 by a chain 14. The arm 4 is connected by an horizontal pivot 5 to a shoe 2 which can be adjusted to any position on the pillar 1 by a rope 3. The pillar 1 can be fixed vertically along the side of a ship's mast or may take the place of a ship's mast. The arms 4, 15 are normally maintained in horizontal position by stays 6, 18 and can be hoisted when it is desired to fold them alongside the pillar 1. The hoisting rope 26 passes round a sheave 24 on the trolly 19, guidepulleys 28, 31 on the arm 15, and a sheave 32 on the pivot 5 to the drum of a winch 33. The trolly is connected by a rope 37 to a weight 34 moving between the pillar 1 and a guide 35, and is retained in any desired position on the arm by the engagement of notches 43 by hinged pawls 42 mounted on a carriage 41 which is traversed by a threaded shaft 45. A lever 49 pivoted in the trolly is connected by spring-arms 51 to vertical slide bars 55, Fig. 3, carrying pivoted catches 57, which can take under the hinged pawls 42. During the outward movement of the trolley, a disk 58 on 'the rope 26 holds up the lever 49, but when the trolley is held by the pawls 42 and the rope 26 is paid out, the lever is lowered and the catches 57 fall inwardly below the pawls 42. During lifting when the disk 58 bears against the lever 49, the spring arms 51 are first tensiohed since the pawls 42 and notches 43 are held in engagement by the weight 34, but further rotation of the winch causes an outward movement of the trolly and the pawls are thereupon released and raised by the upward movement of the bars 55. When the weight 34 approaches the upper limit of its travel, it rocks a weighted lever 60 mounted on a shaft 61 which is provided with a forked lever 62 adapted to disengage a clutch 63 or control the reversing gear of the winch. In a modification, the arm 15 is attached to the shoe 7 by a universal joint and can work on either side of the arm 4 and can also be used as a derrick.
