Abstract
234,169. Airship Guarantee Co., Ltd., and Burney, C. D. Feb. 19, 1924. Anchoring. - A mooring mast for airships is provided with laterally or radially projecting arms near the top of the mast to provide anchor points for side guys which steady the airship as it is hauled down to the mast. A mast A of tubular construction enclosing a passenger lift A<3> carries a rotatable upper portion B, or the whole mast may be constructed to rotate upon a footstep bearing. The part B supports three radial arms provided with gangways, a main arm D<1> having a pulley D<3> around which the main haulage cable e is led to a winch E, and two arms C having pulleys C<1> over which lateral guys f are led to winches F. The part B is rotated by means of a hand-wheel J<10> and gearing J<1> - - J4 until the arms extend to leeward of the mast, in which position the mechanism may be locked by a brake J<6> operated from a hand-wheel J'. The main haulage cable e is payed out through a tube in a spherical fitting K on the airship and secured to the end of a cable extending over the pulley D<3>. A stop on the haulage cable engages a ring to which side guy cables are detachably connected so that they are drawn out through laterally placed tubes near the fitting K until thev can be reached bv the attendants on the mast and secured to cables passing over the pulleys C<1>. The three cables are then hauled in until the length of the cables f equals the distance of the sheaves C<1> from the mooring fitting H. An auxiliary cable g is then let down from the airship and passed through the fitting H to a winch G by which the fitting K is hauled into engagement with the fitting H which is in two parts hinged to clamp the fitting K between them. Radius rods I carried by supports on each side of the platform are connected by their hooked ends i to the airship to enable the airship to turn the part B to adjust itself to the, wind after release of the brake J<6>. The rods I are longitudinally positioned by springs in cylinders pivoted to supports on the platform, and the hooked ends i have spring detents to prevent accidental disengagement. A folding gangway L is provided to give access to the airship.
