351,019. Hoists with guided skips and carriers. MITCHELL, F. G., Albyns, near Romford, Essex. March 19, 1930, No. 8837. [Classes 78 (iii) and 78 (iv).] A locomotive coaling plant of the kind having a wagon-raising and tipping hoist for charging a skip which when lowered automatically discharges, is provided with guiding means for the skip which tip the skip sidewise towards the wagon and with skip-righting means moved by the wagon to gradually return the skip while being loaded to a vertical position. The skip doors are controlled by toggle linkage acted on by a retaining weight. The wagon 11 rests on a carrier 10 mounted in guides 13 which are bifurcated at their upper end to form tipping guides 13c, 13x. Levers 18 pivoted to the carrier are connected by hoisting ropes 19 passing over hoisting drums 5 to balance weights 9. The skip 22 is mounted in guides 20 having concentrically curved upper ends 20a, the skip-hoisting rope 25 passing over a brake drum 6 to a balance weight 26. The skip-righting means comprise levers 27 connected by ropes 28 passing over sheaves 29 to balance weights 30 and pivoted to the bunker 2 coaxially with the curved guides 13x. The levers carry check-plates 31 with wagon retaining beams 32 adapted to bear against the top of the wagon. As the wagon tips it bears against the beam and turns the levers 27 downwards, the levers depressing the projecting ends of pins 22a on the skip causing the skip to gradually assume a vertical position, Fig. 9, as the wagon empties. The skip controlled by the brake drum descends and discharges into the bunker. The skip 22, Fig. 3, has side discharge doors 34 connected by links 36 to crank arms 38 on a spindle carrying a weighted two-armed lever 41 connected by a chain 42 to a hanging weight 43. When the weight 43 rests on the bottom of the bunker, the weighted lever 41 breaks the toggle linkage 36 and the doors open. In a modification, the lower part of the skip guideway is bifurcated, a junction switch being provided, so that the skip can discharge at either side of the bunker.
