Abstract

254,735. Peale, R., Davies, W. S., and Wallace, W. S. July 6, 1925, [Convention date]. Conveying from working face in mines and the like; material delivered from heap to vehicle by scoop-hauling appliance with inclined way; skips; tipping- apparatus.-Coal &c. is transported in a self-loading scoop 1 which comprises bottom and sides but is open at the ends and is provided with a movable plate 16 permitting entry of the scoop into the heap of material and closing the end of the scoop on withdrawal. As shown, the scoop 1 is hauled to and from the working face in a mine gallery by head and tail ropes 62, 63, and is drawn up an inclined way at the entry to the gallery and discharges automatically into trucks 113. The body of the scoop 1, Fig. 5, is secured to an overhead arched frame 10, 11, 12 carrying guides 18, 19 for a slider 31, 32, on which the plate 16 is pivotally mounted at 49. The head and tail ropes 62, 63 are attached to a block pivoted on the slider at 59 so that a pull on the head rope 62 swings the plate downwards about the pivot 49, whilst a pull on the tail rope turns the plate into a horizontal position clear of the sides of the scoop. The slider 31, 32 is automatically held in the position shown at the rear end of the scoop by a detent 76 connected with a weighted lever 88, and this lever is tripped by a stop when the scoop reaches the discharging point, so that the head rope draws the plate 16 to the front of the scoop, sweeping out the material into trucks 113, Fig. 1, or on to conveyers at different heights &c. In a modification, Fig. 13, the scoop 1 is provided with a discharging plate 16<a> pivoted at 237 on a slider 234 moving along the bottom of the scoop. The head and tail ropes are attached near the top of the plate 16a which takes up the position shown in broken lines at 16b when the pull is on the tail-rope 63. The plate 16a is held in the position shown in full lines by detents 260 during haulage on the head rope. In the arrangement shown in Fig. 1 the scoop is hauled up rails 112, having a flared entry 115, on an inclined platform 110 at the discharging point, until the lever 88 engages guide-rails 122. At the same time, or immediately afterwards, trunnion pins 120 on the scoop engage stops 121. Further hauling on the head rope tips the scoop and draws the discharging plate 16 forwards. The platform 110 is provided with upper guide rails 133 and a yoke 135 to limit the tipping movement of the scoop. The rails 133 are on a frame which carries headsheaves 130, 131 for the haulage rope and can be withdrawn to the position shown in broken lines when not in A jack-post near the working face supports a guide-sheave for the tail-rope and a stop-plate which supports the heap of material against the pressure of the scoop. The material may be deposited in front of the stop-plate by an automatic shovelling machine. The head and tail ropes 62, 63 are wound on drums 176, 177, Fig. 11, driven from a continuously-running shaft 192 by similar sets of epicyclic gearing A A<1>. Each drum shaft 173 is connected with the power shaft 192 through reverted wheel trains 201, 202, 210, 212, the shafts 204, which carry pairs of wheels such as 202, 210, being mounted in a brake drum 200. When the brake drum is free to rotate, the gearing runs idly around the pinion 212, but when the brake drum is held by the band 216 the shaft 173 is driven from the shaft 192 at lower speed. The brake-bands 216 are controlled by hand-levers 221 or by solenoids 228. one or other brake being operated according as it is desired to haul on the head rope or the tail rope. In one arrangement the solenoids are controlled at the ends of the run by stops on the head rope.
