236,584. Hydraulic Brake Co., (Assignees of Floraday, B. S.). July 3, 1924, [Convention date]. Pistons; piston-rods.-In an hydraulic brake system for vehicles comprising a cylinder 13 secured to the cover plate of a brake drum, the piston rods 34 have spherical ends engaging the operating levers 18 of the brake band 11 and a pair of pistons 26. Packings 37 of hard rubber normally contact with the pistons but are detached therefrom. A block 39 serving as a stop for the pistons and also reducing the volume of liquid required to fill the system is fixed in the cylinder 13. The liquid is introduced by a central radial channel in the cylinder 13. The pressure piston 52 working in a cylinder 51 secured to the vehicle chassis has a detached packing ring 53 similar to those of the pistons 26 and is connected at 59 to a pedal. The tendency to form a vacuum in the system if the piston 52 is forcibly withdrawn to release the brakes and the consequent admission of air past the piston packing rings if these are secured to the pistons is prevented by the use of the detachable packing rings. The possibility of the packing ring 53 being forcibly withdrawn may be further prevented by the provision of openings 69 in the piston 52. The packing rings by being detached and being made of hard material also remain impervious to the liquid and centrally of the piston. Aprons 33, 60 of rubber or leather secured to the cylinders 13, 51 and to the piston rods serve to exclude dust.
