Cylinders receiving liquid fuel.-In an engine having a cooling jacket 8 for the combustion chamber and a valve 16 for controlling the supply of water to the jacket, a drain cock 22 is provided, interlocked with a sleeve 24 on the handwheel 23 of the valve 16 in such manner that the drain cock must be opened before the valve 16 is closed. The water is rapidly evacuated from the jacket when the drain cock 16 is opened by the pressure of steam generated in the jacket as a result of stoppage of the cooling water circulation. The drain cook 22 may be replaced by a spring- pressed valve opened by steam pressure in the jacket; in this case the draining of the jacket on the closure of the valve 16 is effected automatically. The valve 16, which controls both ingress and egress passages 9, 10, Fig. 4, is provided with flat projections 19 which coact with a partition 13 to prevent leakage between the passages. The jacket 8 is supplied with water from the cylinder jacket 2, Fig. 1, and discharges to a jacket 6 for the upper portion of the cylinder head : when the valve 16 is closed, the water passes direct from the jacket 2 to the jacket 6. The jacket 8 is provided with an air relief valve 20.
