Abstract
235,287. Logan, H. H. March 10, 1924. Brakes; stopping automatically at end of run. -Automatic brake-operating means for hoists, of the kind in which the brakes are applied slowly in the event of overspeed and quickly in the event of overwinding, through the agency of a brake-operating member, released bv the de-energizing of an electric circuit and limited in its movement by an adjustable stop controlled by mechanism synchronized with the winding-gear, is characterized by an adjustable brake-operating member consisting of an armature or core which is held against the action of gravity by an electromagnet or solenoid and engages the adjustable stop directly on de-energization of the circuit. Thus the automatic opening of switch 17 releases the solenoid core 20, allowing the latter to fall by gravity and operate the brakes through the rod 24. During the normal run a stepped member 12 is in register with the adjustable stop 25 to limit the downward movement of the core, but in the event of overwinding, the member 12 is withdrawn gradually by cams 2 on the disc 1 geared to the drum, thus allowing the stop 25 to fall to a greater extent as the overwinding proceeds, to give a graduated harder application of the brakes.
