Abstract
653,305. Brakes for winding gear. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd. March 2, 1948, No. 1755/49. Divided out of 653,282. [Class 78 (v)] The invention refers to control apparatus for winding apparatus used in mines of the type which comprises a lever 18 connected at one end to the operating handle 10 and at the other end to the brake control valve V, the lever pivoting at position 20 when the electromagnet 19 is energized in normal working and pivoting at position 24 directly beneath position 20 when the electromagnet is de-energized in emergency working so as to permit the operating handle 10 to be moved to release the brake.. As shown, handle 10 moves in slot 13 of quadrant 12 and is connected by levers 16, 17, 18, 19a, 21 to operate the brake. When handle 10 is moved from position B to position A in slot 13, the brake is released and vice versa. Lever 18 pivots at point 20 held by energized electromagnet 19. When emergency conditions (e.g. of over speeding) occurs, the electrical circuit is broken and electromagnet 19 is deenergized and lowers point 20, thus applying the brake. Point 20 descends till it rests on pivot 24. Then handle 10 is moved into slot 15 to position C and so releases the brake. This permits the cage of the winding apparatus which is caught between landings to be lowered to the next landing. The slot 14 may be locked so as to prevent its use except during such emergency. Specification 312,113, [Class 78 (v)], is referred to.
