Abstract

234,670. Armstrong, J. J. V., (Continental Can Co., Inc.). Aug. 5, 1924. Capsule and like closures.-The upper end of a can is formed with a rolled edge 2, Fig. 4, the removable cover 5 having a flange 6 engaging the mouth and extended into a rolled edge 7, sealing material 9 being interposed between the two rolled edges if desired. The cover is held in place, until desired to be opened, by an annular sealing ring 13, the flat part 15 of which is slitted at 20, 21, Fig. 2, to form breaking members 23, 24, in which are formed slots 25; upon a knife or other instrument being passed through one of the slots and levered against the edge 14, the ring 13 is caused to break and can be removed. The cover 5 has a raised centre which projects through the central aperture 22 of the ring. In the modified construction shown in Fig. 7 the rolled edge of the cover is replaced by a doubled edge 7 overlying the rolled edge 2 of the can; the sealing ring in this form has a depending part 29'formed with an opening 30 through which a knife or fork can be passed so that the part 29 can be operated as a lever to break the sealing ring.
