Reciprocating and oscillating machines. - A toothed rack or ratchet wheel 6 is intermittently advanced by a self-interrupting magnet 1 which, when energized through the closing of contact 8, 9. is attracted towards its armature 4. The armature is prevented from moving by its contact 8 engaging the fixed contact 9, but the magnet 1, which is connected to the armature by a spring 5, rotates about an axis 3, engages the armature, and carries it with it into the dotted-line position, thereby separating the contacts 8, 9 and causing a pawl 7 to slide over the wheel 6. The magnet 1 then falls by its own weight or by a spring, causing the pawl 7 to rotate the wheel 6 and the contacts 8 to re-engage the contact 9. Several ratchet wheels 6 may be driven simultaneously by arranging their magnets in one circuit, but in this case only one pair of contacts 8, 9 is necessary.
