Abstract

515,473. Induction relays. SIEMENS & GENERAL ELECTRIC RAILWAY SIGNAL CO., Ltd., CANDLER, J. E., and COLLEY, E. R. May 3, 1938, No. 13179. [Class 38 (v)] When coils 6 of a relay of the alternating current vane type are energised, the vane moves through part of its stroke but is prevented from moving its full distance till a synchronous motor, energised simultaneously with the coils, has slowly rotated a disc through a certain angle. In the form shown, the coils 6 repel a vane 2 mounted on an axle 4 causing the lowering of a link 10 and arm 11 and rocking of a member 14 so that contacts 12 are moved away from contacts 16. Before the member 14 has rocked sufficiently to cause contacts 13 to engage 17 the motion is stopped by an arm 18 on the axle 4 engaging beneath a disc 21, Fig. 4, and raising this bodily into engagement with a pinion 26 driven by the synchronous motor. The disc 21 now rotates clockwise, Fig. 4, and after a time interval a slot 32 in the disc comes opposite the end of the arm 18 allowing this to move upward and the switch contacts to complete their movement. At the same time the disc 21 drops out of engagement with the pinion 26. On de-energisation of the coils 6, the vane 2 moves back part way and the arm 18 moves out of the slot 32. Full movement is prevented by an arm 19 on the axle 4 engaging the periphery of another disc 22 mounted in front of the disc 21 and coupled to the disc 21 by an idler pinion 35. Gravity and a return spring rotate both these discs quickly to their original position and when this is reached the end of the arm 19 slips into a notch 33 in the disc 22, and switch members now complete their movement. The time delay occuring during the "operation" of the relay may be adjusted by varying the mutual position of the disc 21 which may for this purpose be temporarily declutched from the disc 22 which is locked by the arm 19.
