Roads, ways, and working places, arrangement of.-In mining coal, a haulway 10, Fig. 1, is driven, followed by a lateral entry 11, and cross entries 12 are driven towards the lateral entry; angularly arranged working faces 14 are then formed and the coal passed through the cross and lateral entries and the haulway, preferably by face conveyers 18 and conveyers in the entries. Further lateral entries 11a, 11b are then formed and cross entries 12a advanced towards the latter. Development of the haulway and entries is preferably maintained only slightly in advance of the working of the faces 14. The operations may advance from or retreat towards the opening of the mine. In Fig. 5, the lateral entries are inclined to the haulway and lead direct to the working faces 14, which may differ in length. In a further modification, a serrated working face is provided between two lateral entries. Where the roof is weak. Fig. 8, faces adjacent alternate cross entries 12 are worked, the roof allowed to fall at these parts, and the faces adjacent the remaining cross entries then worked. Triangular, square, or continuous pillars of coal may be left in the workings.
