Abstract
611,340. Mining-machines. MAVOR & COULSON, Ltd., and GULLICK, E. D. M. April 29, 1946, Nos. 12786 and 37947. [Class 68 (i)] In a mining machine with a shearing head incorporating one or more cutters thrust into the coal seam by direct pressure applied parallel to the floor and to the coal face, the machine being moved by a rope, chain or the like laterally offset from the plane of the thrust of the shearing head, means are provided to neutralize the skewing effect due to such offset. In Fig. 2, a head 5, comprising an advance cutter 8, upper and lower cutters 6, a bottom shovel-like cutter 9, and a top cutter, is carried by a body 4 provided with a haulage drum 11 from which a rope 12 passes over pulleys 13, 14, forwardly over a fixed pulley 16 and back over pulleys 28, 29, to an anchorage 19; pulleys 28, 29, are carried by an arm 24 pivoted at 25 to the machine and bearing against an adjustable screw stop 27 to neutralize the skewing effect. In Fig. 3, the haulage rope passes forwardly from the machine around fixed pulley 30, back and around floating pulley 33, and forwardly to anchorage 36; a further rope 38 passes forwardly from the machine, around a floating pulley 34 connected to pulley 33, back and around a fixed pulley 44 and forwardly to an adjustable arm 43 through which the neutralizing effect is applied. Means may be provided to apply percussion to the head, cutters or parts thereof.
