Abstract
692,542. Mining-machines. JOY MANUFACTURING CO. Jan. 7, 1948 -[Jan. 19, 1946], No. 491/48. Class 68(i) [Also in Group XXX] A mining-machine for breaking down the face comprises a body 3 mounted on a sledge 6 which is provided with roof engaging jacks 10, 14 the cylinders of which slide on plates in tracks formed on the sledge. The cylinders of the rear jacks are attached to the piston rods 20 of jacks 21 on the sledge so that by suitable operation of the three groups of jacks the machine is advanced step-by-step. Positioned in universal mountings 27 at the front and at the sides of the body are two booms 26 carrying at the outer ends rotary wedge cutters which are driven through a suitable drive from a motor positioned in the body. These booms can be moved vertically and horizontally by jacks 52, 60 and are used to cut a continuous kerf around the area of the face to be broken away. In to this outstanding portion of the face is forced a rotating tapered cutter 5 which is advanced by jacks 84 and is driven from the motor through a splined shaft. The entry of the cutter is facilitated by a bit mounted coaxially within the cutter 5. As a result of the entry of the cutter 5 into the face, an entry which may be before, during or after the formation of the kerf, the outstanding portion is broken away to fall into the scoop 181 of a shaker conveyer 185,. which is slidably attached to, and passes beneath, the machine. The conveyer means shown form the subject matter of Specification 692,575, [Group XXX].
