Abstract

590,604. Mining-machines. MAYOR & COULSON, Ltd., and MAVOR, J. B. Aug. 9, 1944, No. 15182. [Class 68 (i)] Relates to mining machines of the kind in which, as the machine advances, a wedge-like head is thrust into the coal roughly parallel to the coal face to split away the coal, and comprises the provision in the head of one or more chisel-like parts and electrically, pneumatically or hydraulically operated power-hammering means applying blows to said parts as the head advances. The machine may include a shearing cutter chain as in Specification 565,342. The machine as shown comprises a jack B pivoted to the piston-rod 1 of a ram C, the cylinder 3 of which is connected to the head A, the jack and head being advanced alternately by the ram. The head comprises a centre portion A<1>, pivotally adjustable about a vertical axis and provided with three prongs with movable tips 6, behind each of which is a compressed-air hammer mechanism 7 ; the head also has a lower portion A<3> with a horizontal cutting edge and a laterally-delivering scoop, and a pivoted roof-cutting portion A<2> as described in Specification 590,602, the portions A<2>, A<3> having teeth and hammer mechanisms similar to the parts 6, 7.
