Spindle apparatus; stop-apparatus, non-automatic. - In a machine for spinning, doubling, and twisting yarns wherein the spindle A, Fig. 1, passes through a tube or carrier B provided at its upper end with a ring C and traveller D, the carrier and spindle being separately driven at different speeds, the carrier is supported externally at or near its upper end by one or more bearings b, and constitutes a guide or support for the spindle through a plate or bearing E, which contacts with the inner surface of the carrier and is rigidly secured to the spindle. The carrier bearing comprises three wheels b, Fig. 4, mounted on plain or anti-friction bearings on studs capable of adjustment in slots b<1> in a bracket b<2> adjustably secured by a slot b<4> to the top of the carrier rail b<3>. Instead of the wheels b, a ball or other anti. friction, bearing, which may encircle the carrier, may be provided. The lower end of the carrier is fixed to the portion b<8> of a sleeve b<5> which constitutes a bearing for the spindle A and serves as a wharl by which the carrier is driven. The position occupied by the bearing E when the spindle A is in the upper limit of its travel relative to the carrier B is shown in dotted lines in Fig. 1. The brake for arresting the movement of the spindle A comprises an eccentric a<1>, Fig. 2, adapted to be moved by a handle a<4> to clamp the wharl a against a stop a<5> on a bracket a<3>. The carrier B is driven at a constant speed and the spindle A at a variable speed to produce constant twist as the cop varies in diameter.
