Spindle apparatus.-In a device comprising a leading and a lagging member, a brake is applied momentarily to the lagging member by electric means controlled by the slack in the thread caused by the two members approximating to the same speed. The spindle 3 is carried by a footstep bearing 2 mounted on the rail 1, and by a sleeve 6 rotating with the spindle in ball bearings in the building-rail 10. The bobbin 14 is mounted upon a split sleeve 13 carried by an annular flange 11 forming part of a ball race 8. The thread 22 passes through a hole 20 at the top of a tube 15 mounted upon the spindle 3, is passed round the tube, and is delivered to the bobbin through a hole 21 in the flared lower end of the tube. The thread 22 supports a piece 32, which, when the thread becomes slack, falls on a fixed contact-piece 33 and completes an electric circuit, energizing an electro-magnet 27 and bringing a pivoted brakepiece 24 into contact with the flange 11. When the thread becomes taut again, the circuit is broken.
