Abstract
388,078. Tensioning thread during unwinding. BRITISH CELANESE, Ltd., 22, Hanover Square, London, POOL, W. and LATHAM, L., c/o British Celanese, Spondon, near Derby. Aug. 20, 1931, No. 23496. [Class 120 (ii).] Thread-tensioning means for use in the over end unwinding of thread packages comprises guide means constraining the thread to pass through a point which follows a circular path about the axis of the package, and yielding means which, prior to the engagement of the thread by said guide means tend to draw the thread substantially radially towards the axis of the package to a degree depending on the tension in the thread. The invention is described in connection with a double-twist device of the type described in Specification 369,293. A rotating spindle 8 with a whorl 9 is mounted in bearings 10 and separated by ball bearings 7 from a tube 6 which carries the stationary thread package 5. Rollers 11 mounted in an enlarged portion 12 of the spindle 8 have flanges 13, 14 which engage races 15, 16 to keep the package 5 stationary. A tube 22 fitting into blocks 23 in the tube 6 and supported by a spring 24 carries an annular member 25, supporting a brass disc 26, with a burnished edge, and in an annular groove a light ring 27 carrying a spiral spring 28 terminating in an eye 29. The thread 30 passes over a burnished cap 20 on the bobbin, through the eye 29 over the edge of the disc 26, down the tube 22 to an exit 32 and thence in the form of a rotating balloon 33 to a guide eye 34. The spring 28 which preferably makes one-half to one complete turn about the axis of the package compensates for variation in the tension of the thread as it unwinds. The disc 26 may be freely rotatable and may have a ball bearing mounting. The cap 20 may be replaced by a disc similar to the disc 26 and mounted below the spring 28 and if desired a further disc and a further spring may be mounted above the disc 26. The disc 26 may be replaced by a rotatable guide eye.
