229,814. Pollard, H. J., and Bristol Aeroplane Co., Ltd. Jan. 8, 1924. Framework.-Light metal girders for aircraft &c. comprise strips of sheet metal joined together side by side and so shaped or disposed as to afford an open parallel sided channel at the top and bottom of the section having at each side a substantially flat marginal portion with an outwardly-directed flange, flat or substantially flat plate members being riveted each to one of the flat outer faces of the marginal portions of the top and bottom channels. Fig. 1 shows a girder formed from two plates riveted together, the open channel portions having flat surfaces C accessible from both sides to which strips G may be riveted. Additional flanges D at right angles to the surfaces C are provided and the edges of these flanges are curled as shown. The flanges D or surfaces C may be braced together by flat strips J or flanged members K as shown in Fig. 4, or a continuous corrugated bracing strip L, Fig. 6, may be used for this purpose. The flat surfaces C may have inwardly pressed corrugations and the flanges D may be further turned down at right angles as shown at E, Fig. 6, and this flange may have a curled edge. In all cases the middle portion of the girder does not exceed the width between the surfaces C. Specification 125,748 is referred to.
