Abstract
192,966. Short, H. O. April 11, 1922. Planes and the like, construction of; framework. -The ribs of planes having an outer covering composed of strips 5 of sheet metal extending in the direction of flight, are formed of upper and lower sheet-metal booms 1, 2, of the nessary curvature, distanced apart by members 8, and having angle strips 3, 4 riveted or otherwise fixed on each of their sides in such a manner as to leave a part of the booms 1, 2 projecting outwardly. The bracing members 8 are arranged after the fashion of a lattice girder, and are constructed of angular cross-section with flattened ends which are riveted between the angle plates 3, 4 in gaps 9 formed in the inner edges of the booms 1, 2. The covering strips 5 rest on the angle plates 3, 4 with their flanges 6 bearing against the projecting part of the booms 1, 2. A channel strip 7 is passed over the flanges 6 of the covering strips 5, and the whole is united by rivets. When a spar 10, Fig. 2, passes through the rib, a positioning plate 11 is secured in the same manner as the bracing members 8.
