Framework.-The sheet-metal spar for aeroplanes described in Specification 122,648 is modified by forming corrugations 4, Fig. 4, along the upper and lower portions, and by embossing the triangulated web members 3 outwards beyond their original plane and bending their edges inwards beyond their plane in the opposite direction to form the cross-section shown in Fig. 5. The upper and lower portions may be further reinforced by similiarly shaped plates 5. In the form shown in Fig. 4, the spar is made up of two sheetmetal members 1<a>, 1<b> of L-section. Fig. 6 shows a spar made of a single sheet, the edges of which are flanged at 6 and united by welding or riveting, or by a key 7; or the spar may consist of two channel sections united at the top and bottom by flanges such as 6.
