- 5 any horizontalload. imposed thereon by shifting lading to the corner post or side wall of the car. 1 f .Applicants assignee promotes and sells car end walls, as shown in Patents No.'1,681,811, and No.
7 I j1,681,812 of August 21, 1928, .and it has been found 1 10 that such ends having the divided or split corrugationscannot commercially and economically be produced in thin metallicsheets because the terminations of the corrugations tear in the pressing p and the metal adjacent, theitermina- V ,15' tions buckles to such an extent that it is difiicult to secure a waterproof attachmentvof the car end to the car structure. have beenf experienced in .iorming such corruj gated end walls of someof the new non-corrosive 00/ steel sheets. r
One of the objects of the invention is to form arelatively thin metallic sheet with a plurality of substantially parallel corrugations which extend to theopposite edges of the sheet and to provide relatively thin corner post members which provide means of attaching the corrugated metallic sheet to the car structure. Such corner posts also provide'rneans to effectively continue'the corrugations beyond the edges'of the sheet so as to conn tinue and extend the beam effect of the corrugations. My invention is an improvement upon the structure shown in Patent No. 1,236,744 of August "Another object of the invention is to provide means-to secure a corrugated metallic sheet to the 17 3 corner post member or members so as to form a f waterproof construction therebetween.
v Another object is to'form a corner'post of two cooperating members,'one of which providesan' '4 effective means of welding the other member to [5 shown; such as end sill l, roof 3, push pole pocket -14,.striking casting 5; top corner piece 6, running board .1,- side sheathingBQiriside side, lining 9, in-
side end'lining ill, frame member H and nailing strip 12.
' 5 j The metallic sheet l 3is ar with a plurality marginal edge of the corrugated sheet.
Even greater difiiculties V of substantially parallel corrugations, such for instanceyasshown in elevation in Fig. 1. These corrugations extend to opposite edges of the sheet.
An outer corner post-and an inner corner post of material which is preferably thicker than the metallic sheet. l3 are provided to secure the corrugated-metallic sheet .to the side sheathing 8 or other part of the side Wall. Each of the posts comprise two angularly disposed arms with one of the arms (I6I'l) of each post riveted (19) to the side sheathing 8 and frame members II and the other arms (20-2 I) of both of the posts overlapping the inside and outside respectively of the v One or both of the arms 20 and 2| are bent to conform to the contour of the corrugated sheet.
The arms 20 and 2| may be riveted to the corrugated sheet, but I preferably weld them to the sheetby providing a continuous weld at to secure the outer arm 2| to the corrugated sheet and spot or intermittent weld (shown at 26) to secure the inner arm 20 to the corrugated sheet. In this arrangement the outer continuous weld 25 forms a waterproof construction and the inner weld 26 col operates with the outer weld to continue the beam eflect of the corrugations to the attaching flanges l6and H which are in the plane of the anchorage I of the-beams. The arm 20 of the inner post prefunderstood that the invention is not limited to the exact details of construction shown and described, as it is obvious that various modifications thereof, within the scope of. the claims, will occur to persons skilled in the art.
I claim:
1. In a railway car, the combination of a car side wall, a metallic sheet formed with a plurality of substantially parallel corrugations extending to one edge of the sheet, an outer corner post and an.
inner corner post,.each comprising two angularly disposed arms, certain of said arms attached to said side wall and the other arms thereof. overlapping the inside and outside respectively of said sheet adjacent said edge, and meansto secure the "last mentioned arms to said sheet, both of saidlast mentioned arms conforming to the contour of the corrugated sheet,'the arm which overlaps the inside of the sheet being longer than the arm'which overlaps the outside of the sheet to form a backing for Welding.
2. In a railway car, the combination of a car side wall, a metallic sheet formed with a plurality of substantially parallel corrugations extending to one edge of the sheet, an outer corner post and an inner corner post, each comprising two angiularly disposed arms, certain of said arms attached to said side wall and the other arms thereof overlapping the inside and outside respectively of said sheet adjacent said edge, the inner edge of the outside arm being continuously welded to the sheet for waterproofing and the inner edge of the inside arm being intermittently welded to the.
sheet, the arm which overlaps the inside of the sheet being longer than the arm which overlaps the outside of the sheet to form a backing for the welding, the arm which overlaps the outsideof the sheet being corrugated to conform to the corrugations in the sheet, the corrugations in the outer corner post extending around the corner of the car and merging into the arm of said post which isattached to the side wall.
3. In a railway car, the combination of a car side wall, a metallic sheet formed with a plurality of substantially parallel corrugations extending to one edge of the sheet, an outer corner post and an inner corner post attached to said side wall, said posts having portions overlapping the inside and outside, respectively, of said sheet adjacent said edge, said portions conforming to the contour of the corrugated sheet, the portion which overlaps the inside of the corrugated sheet being longer than the portion which overlaps the outside of the corrugated sheet to form a backing for welding, and welded material securing the edge of said outer portion to the corrugated sheet. 1
4. In a railway car, the combination of a car side wall, a metallic sheet formed with a plurality of substantially parallel corrugations extending to one edge of the sheet, an outer corner post and an inner corner post attached to said side wall, said posts having portions overlapping the inside and outside, respectively, of said sheet adjacent said edge, said portions conforming to the contour of the corrugated sheet, the portion which overlaps one side of the corrugated sheet being longer than the portion which overlaps the other side of the corrugated sheet to form a backing for welding, and welded material securing the edge of said shorter portion to the corrugated sheet.
