ABSTRACT: A railway car side includes a plurality of vertically extending horizontally spaced posts of hat-shaped configuration connected to corrugated stiffener panels supporting outer sheathing. The corrugated panels have end portions ex- 105/329 tending adjacent to flanges of the hat sections and are con- 409 369 nected to the posts by means of flanged brackets which extend diagonally from the webs of the hat sections to the corrugations.

INVENTORS THOMAS O'NEILL NORMAN M. SZALA WILLIAM VAN DER SLUYS RAILWAY CAR SIDE CONSTRUCTION SUMMARY It is the primary object of this invention to provide an improved side construction for a railway car of the passenger or transit type. It is a common practice in the construction of railway car siding to utilize sheathing which may be of a thin stainless steel or aluminum construction. The sheathing is generally reinforced by means of inner corrugated panels disposed between vertical posts horizontally spaced along the sheathing of the car. In many types of construction corrugations have been directly attached to the vertical posts. This type of connection has in many instances caused buckling of the sidewall sheathing thereby precluding the smooth surface which is desired. The present construction provides a manner of connecting the corrugations to the posts by the utilization of formed brackets which will prevent the sheathing from developing an offset and thus assuring an effective and smooth outer surface. This is achieved by the utilization of a hat section for the post which comprises outer flanges connected directly to the sheathing by welding or other means. The inner stiffener corrugated panels are temiinated at the ends of the flanges and are connected to the post by means of the formed brackets which extend from the webs of the hat-shaped section diagonally and are connected to the corrugated panels by means of flat flange portions. This manner of connection prevents the development of the deficiencies found in the conventional construction referred to hereinabove.
BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWINGS DETAILED DESCRIPTION A transit or passenger car side is generally referred to by the reference character 10, and includes an upper longitudinally extending Z-shaped stringer 11 and a Z-shaped stringer 12 which is disposed approximately midway between the upper and lower ends of the side 10. The side 10 includes a lower side sill 13 which may be of a boxlike construction. The skin or sheathing for the side 10 is designated generally at 14 and comprises an upper panel 15 provided at the upper end of a window opening 16 which is disposed between the Z-shaped stringers l1 and 12. A plurality of vertical posts generally designated at 17 are horizontally spaced along the side 10 and each comprises an inner vertical wall 18 connected to vertically extending webs 19 extending outwardly from the wall 18 and including flanges 20 in hat-shaped configuration. The flanges 20 are provided with coextensive lips 21 projecting inwardly from the sheathing 14. The upper extent of the side 10 is also provided with a portion of a roof sheet 22 as indicated in FIG. 2.
The skin or sheathing 14 further comprises a lower side sheet 23 which is substantially flat at its lower portion and includes an upper corrugated portion 24 suitably connected at its upper ends to the sheathing l4 and the Z-shaped stringer I2 underneath the window opening 16.
As best indicated in FIGS. 2 and 3, the lower side sheet 23, in the region disposed below the window opening 16, is provided with corrugated stifi'ener sheets or backing plates 25 having a plurality of horizontally or longitudinally extending corrugations 26. The corrugations 26 as shown in FIG. 3 terminate slightly short of the lips 21 and are connected to the vertical posts 17 by means of stiffener brackets 27. Each stiffener bracket 27 comprises an intermediate plate portion 28 having at opposite ends thereof flange portions 29 and 30. The flanges 29 of the stiffener brackets 27 are connected to the webs 19 and the plate portion 28 extends diagonally toward the corrugations 26. The flange portions 30 are connected to the corrugations 26 and are provided at their ends with inwardly extending lips 31. While the brackets 27 have been shown as short individual units, it is contemplated that they may run the length of the posts if desired. As best shown in FIGS. 1 and 2, the sheathing 14 extending laterally from the window opening 16 is also reinforced by a suitable corrugated reinforcing sheet 32.
As indicated in FIG. 3, the connection of the corrugations 26 to the lower side sheet 23 may be made by welding, the flanges 20 providing a flat attaching surface. The ends of the corrugations 26 in turn are connected to the posts 17 by means of the stiffener brackets 27 by welding. By virtue of the connection of the stiffener brackets 27 to the hat-shaped flanges 20 and to the corrugations 26, the possibility of developing an offset in the skin 14 or lower side sheet 23 is eliminated and yet an effective supporting arrangement for the sheathing 14 is provided.
Thus the objective of the invention has been disclosed and described and the scope thereof is defined in the appended claims.
