Abstract
129,023. Brown, E. E., and Mooney, D. J. Sept. 26, 1917. Framework; planes, construction of. -The spars of aircraft wings and fuselages are constructed of top and bottom metal plates a, Figs. 1 and 2, connected together at each side by rectangular plates b flanged along each edge, transverse plates d being secured between the ends of adjacent plates b and extended on one or more sides to form wing ribs or cross-frames of fuselages, or for the attachment of ribs, fairing edges, &c. The plates b, d are formed with apertures and embossed. In the .form shown in Fig. 5, the top and bottom plates a are made continuous with a side portion f, which replaces one row of plates b. Fig. 10, shows a section of a rib formed from a plate d, the upper and lower flanges i being strengthened by diagonal strips k. Fig. 13 shows a rib composed of upper and lower channels n connected by a web formed by diagonal wiring or channel strip o, which is nipped between the flanges of the channels at the parts p and secured to the plates d of the spars. Fig. 14 shows a cross-section of a fuselage composed of spars r and transverse members s formed as a continuation of, or connected to, the cross-plates d of the spars.
