Guards, controlling. - In a machine for surfacing plate glass means are provided for enclosing the glass and tools during operation. A table 4 is supported on a frame which has an upward and cylindrical extension 12 forming a shield, an opening 14 being provided therein. The opening is closed during operation of the machine by a vertically movable shield 15, which is lowered when the grinding-tool 32 is raised from the glass. The grinding tool is lifted automatically from the glass at the conclusion of the operation by a gear sector 67 which engages a rack formed on a sleeve 36 carrying the grinding-shaft 35. The sector is rocked by a pitman 169 moved by a crank 70 on a shaft 71, which is rotated, through gearing 78, 74, by a motor 77, or bv hand by a wheel 76. The shield 15 is raised and lowered as the grinding-head is lowered and raised by movement of pulleys 88 by means of a lever 84 rocked by the pitman 169, supporting cables 80, 82 passing round the pulleys and secured at one end to the shield and at the other end to the frame.
