Abstract

228,364. Allen, J. M. Feb. 25, 1924. Stockings and socks. -A full fashioned stocking &c. with a tapered portion 2 above the heel is made on a circular machine by first knitting a supporting band of fabric 1, then the area 2, starting with a small number of needles and then in succession, the heel gore 3, the foot bottom 4, the toe gore, and the instep fabric 6. When the point 2<1> is reached, the fabric is widened out with a taper matching the area 2. When the fabric is sufficiently widened, the supporting band 1 is cast off and the ankle and leg portion 8 is knitted as a tapered flat piece. After removal from the knitting machine, the portion 9 is cut away and the tapered edges of the parts 2 and 8 and the parts 4 and 6 are secured together on a looping machine. The edges of the leg portion are also secured together.
