Abstract

669,816. Knitting. MILLER, I. L. (Miller, M. C.). Nov. 19, 1947 [Dec. 6, 1946], No. 30687/47. Class 74 (ii). A knitted stocking blank comprises an ankle and upper heel portion consisting of a series of courses extending right across the blank with a heel group of loops at each end of each of said courses, the said groups being stepped outwardly in selected ones of said courses to provide left and right upper heel areas of constant width and the intervening group of loops in that course next following each of the selected courses having loops added at each end thereof to provide at each end of the series of intervening groups an interposed instep area of increasing width with-series of eyelets forming lines of demarcation between the upper heel areas and the interposed instep areas; and left and right lower heel. areas constituted by series of short courses knitted as extensions of the upper heel areas at each side of the fabric while knitting is suspended upon the intervening terminal wale loops of the whole instep .area. The loops of the wales forming the rectangular upper heel areas 16 at the sides of the blank are stepped outwardly at selected courses during knitting of these areas and the instep area 18 is correspondingly progressively widened, by the addition of loops at each side thereof, to provide additional triangles 20 of instep fabric, separated from the areas 16 by lines 22 of eyelets. Strengthening courses 24 are then knitted entirely across the fabric. Thereafter, two inwardly tapered gores 26, 28, and, if desired, a third gore ending at the line 30, are formed at each side of the blank by progressively shortening the courses at their inner ends. The foot is then knitted across the entire width. Preferably, the apices of the gores are on the same or closely adjacent wales and substantially on the eyelet lines 22. An upper gore 38, Fig. 3, formed, as above, by narrowing, may be followed by a gore 40 having an initial short course and following courses successively lengthened at their inner ends to produce a pronounced eyelet formation between the gores. Left and right groups of narrowing points step the heel area loops outwardly in forming the areas 16, 20 and, during knitting of the heel gores, function as pressers, the needles being held out of engagement with the usual press edge. The heel areas 16 may be formed with the yarn carriers used for the spliced ankle portion; or an additional splicing yarn may be employed to reinforce them.
