228,350. Gosman, S., (Reid, R. S.). Feb. 11, 1924. Fastenings for sliding windows; catches, gravity.-A pair of sliding sashes are provided with a gravity catch fitted into the window frame with one arm engaging a rack on the upper sash and a second arm normally engaging a recess in the top corner of the lower sash so that when the lower sash is closed and fastened by an independent fastener, the upper sash cannot be opened, but when the lower sash is opened, the upper sash can be opened. The catch comprises an arm b engaging the rack c on the upper sash rigidly connected by an arm b<2> with an arm b<1> normally fitting into a recess y<z> in the top corner of the lower sash y<1>. The arms b, b<1> are one on each side of the rail x<1>. When the lower sash is closed and fastened, the arm b' rests in the recess y<2> and the arm b engages the teeth of the rack c so that the upper sash cannot be lowered. If it had been left partially open for ventilation when the lower sash was closed, it can be closed, the arm riding over the teeth of the rack c. When the lower sash is unfastened and raised, the side of the sash engages the arm b<1> and tilts it, removing the arm b out of the path of the rack c so that the upper sash can be lowered. A plate a with a flange a<1> is inserted into the recess in the frame x containing the catch to prevent releasing the arm b by means of a knife blade.
