Ap lication filed September e, 1023. Serial No. 001,252.
My invention relates to a window box adapted to hold foods and arranged to be disposed against a raised lower sash so that fresh air may enter beneath said sash and circulate through the box by reason of perforations in the walls of the box.
The general object of my invention is to provide a window box and associated devices which will permit of the box being positioned on the window sill directly against the lower rail of theraised lower sash, adjacent a side of the window and to provide means whereby a com lete closure of the-window may be effects to prevent drafts. A further object of the invention is to provide a box for the indicated purpose, the construction of which will reflect practical considerations with respect to strength, simplicity and efliciency.
The nature of my invention, its characteristic features and advantages will clearly appear as the descri tion proceeds.
Reference is to e had to the accompanying drawin s forming a part of this specification, it ein understood that the drawings are mere y illustrative of one exam is of the invention.
igure 1 is a perspective view of the invention emplaced in a window;
Figure 2 is a vertical section on an enlarged scale in a plane indicated by the line 22 in Figure 1;
Figure 3 is a longitudinal vertical section as indicated by the line 33, Figure 2;
Figure 4.- is a horizontal section as indicated by the line 4-4, Figure 2;
Figure 5 is a horizontal section through the window frame showin my novel means for closing the window a ove the meeting rails to prevent draft when the box is emplaced against the raised lower sash;
Figure 6 is a perspective view of the closure means for the window above the meeting rail of the lower sash;
Figure 7 is a detail in transverse vertical section as indicated by the lines 7-7 in Figures 5 and 6. y
In carrying out my invention in accordance with the illustrated exam le a box 10 is provided having a front, (lbor 11 here shown as a swing door. At the back of the box at one end is an extension back plate 12 having a finger-hold 13, said plate sliding through a slot in the adjacent end of the vsition against box 10 and movable between the back 14 ol the box and an inwardly directed flange 15 on said end of the box.
Within the box I'provide a table 16 prefcrably of sheet metal as is the box 10. The table 16 is formed at the side edges with de ending flanges 17, the flanges of adjacent si es being formed into le s 18 the lower ends 19 of which are made tubular and adaptedto be passed downwardly through perforations in the false bottom 110 of the ex 10 to rest onthe fixed bottom 210. The false bottom 110 and the table 16 are removable to facilitate cleanim of said parts and the box body. The table 16 and the back 14 are also perforated to afford circulation of air.
To emplace the box the lower sash is raised and the box set on the window sill with its back directly against the lower rail of the raised lower sash. In order to effeet a tight closure of the window with the box in position. 1 provide on the top of the box a closure plate 20 an end 21 of which is formed with members to enter between the jamb members of the window. A slide plate 22 is movable on top of the plate 20 in a guide 23 alon the front edge of said plate 20. In the pfiite 22 there is a longitudinal slot 24 through which a bolt 25 passes, said bolt passing through the plate 20 and through the top of the box 10, the belt at its upper end receiving a wing nut 26 for ti htening the slide plate 22 in the adjusted position. Said slide plate 22 at its outer end 122 is formed with members corresponding with the jamb members to make a close fit against the jamb. The bolt 25 passes also through a transverse slot 27 in the top of the box 10 whereby the two plates 20, 22, and the bolt 25 may be together moved transversely of the box to cause the back edges of said plates to contact with the glass of the sash A, said back edges being downturned as at 121, Figure 2. With the lates 21, 22 engaging the opposite jambs an contactin with the glass of the lower sash and with t e slide plate 12 moved to an outer pothe adjacent jamb, the opening formed by the raising of the sash is completely closed against drafts.
To support the box 10 in position brackets 28 of sultable design are fastened by screws or the like beneath the window sill as shown in Figures 2 and 3.
lows: The casing is formed .with side. flanges overlapping the plates 29,31 and- It becomes necessary in order to exclude drafts when the box 10 is emplaced as described, to effect a closure also of the window above the lower sash because in the raised position of such sash, the meeting rails of the two sashes are separated. I therefore provide an assemblage as follows The plate 29 has holes 30 to receive screws or other fasteners for fastening the plate down to the top of the meeting rail a of the lower sash. A second plate 31 isalso provided and formed with holes 32 to receive fasteners for securing said plate to t we meetirg rail a. The plates 29 and 31 ar secured to rail a, at opposite sides of the sash fastener element 15 on said sash. Between the plates 29, ll is a casing to cover the sash fastener element'B. baid casing is secured .to one of the plates 29 and 31 in a manner to permit the casing 33 to be swung into line with said plates and over the fastener element B or to be swung outward to a position to uncover fastener element 15 for manipl'llating the latter. The connection between casiug 33 and the element 31"is as folthrough one of said flanges 35 is passed a vertical pivot pin 34 which-passes through a slot 36 in the plate 31, the arrangement permitting the casing33 to be moved to its inner position or tothe outer position and at the same time to insure its complete movement against the glass of the sash A. The plates 29, 31 have weather strips '37along the inner edges and similar strips 38 are provided on the casing 33.- It'will be noted that said casing as shown in Figure 2 is open at the bottom and back.
I would state in conclusion that While the I illustrated example constitutes a practical embodiment of my invention, I do not llmit myself strictly to the exact details herein illustrated, since, manifestly, the same can be considerably varied without departure the appen ed claims.
Having thus describedniy invention, I
claim: V I 1. A window box adapted to be disposed in a window frame in an o 'ening below the lower sashwhen raised, an means mounted on the top of the box to efi'ect an air tight closure between the box and the pane of the window sash and entirely across the window opening at one side of the box, and a vertical plate adapted to close the space between one end of the boxand the adjacent jamb, said vertical plate lying against and in parallel relation thereto within the box, said box having a vertical slot through that end of the bexthrough which said plate may slide, said vertical plate and the aforesaid means on the top of the box cooperatmg to completely close the space below the window sash and the adjacent jamb.
2. The combination with a window box, of a fixed plate at one end on top of the box and adapted. to contact with the window pane and the adjacent jainb, a slide movable longitudinally on said fixed plate and adapted to engage the. pane and be projected beyond the opposite endof the box, and
4, A window box having a, perforated false bottom movably resting on the main bottom of the box, and having substantially the same area and shape as-ithe true bottom,
and a table havinglegs engaging said false bottom for holding the table in position.
