Circular machines. - A multi-feed rib machine, for producing vertical stripes and other ornamental effects, is provided with two kinds of needles arranged in groups, one kind having short butts and latches of normal length, and the others, longer butts and longer latches, one kind knitting the thread from alternate feeders and the other kind knitting the threads from the remaining feeders. Fig. 1 shows the cams of a two-feed machine, the clearing cam E, at the feeder which is to supply its thread to the short-butted needles A only, raises both kinds of needles, but owing to their long latches B<2>, the long butted needles B do not clear. The knitting cam F at this feeder has two actuating faces F<1>, F<2>, the leading face F<1>, which is sunk below the face F<2>, engaging only the needles B, which are thereby drawn down too early to take the thread, which is taken by the needles A when drawn down by the face F<2>. The clearing cam G at the feeder which is to deliver its thread to the needles B engages only, by reason of its reduced thickness, the long butts B' of these needles, which are thereby raised high enough to clear, the needles A remaining stationary. In making vertical stripes the dial needles take and knit the threads from all the feeders, additional effects being obtained by employing the two kinds of needles, actuated in a similar manner, in the dial.
