Circular machines.-One or more needle-beds are provided in each of which there is a single 'set of needles actuated for loopforming purposes by a single cam system so that the needles are divided at the feeders, some being caused to knit while others do not knit. Fig. 1 shows portions 1, 2 of the cylinder and dial cam boxes corresponding to two adjacent feeders. The needle cylinder carries two kinds of needles 3, 4 arranged in alternation or otherwise, the needles 3 having long butts 3a and short tails 3b while the needles 4 have short butts 4a and long tails 4b. The dial needles 5, 6 are arranged similarly to the cylinder needles, the needles 5 having long butts 5a and short tails 5b. while the needles 6 have short butts 6a and long tails 6b notched at 6c. The cylinder cams are so arranged that at one feed the butts 3a pass along an idle track 9 while the needles 4 are lifted by a cam 8 acting on their tails 4b so that their butts 4a pass above the point of a cam 11; these needles clear their loops and knit. At the next feed the short butts 4a pass along an idle track while the long butts 3a are taken up by the. extension 14 of a clearing cam 13. If a dial is used, the long butt needles 5 may co-operate with the short butt cylinder needles 4, while the short butt needles 6 co-operate at the next feeder, with the long butt needles 3. For this purpose there may be provided, at one feed, an idle track 18 for the butts 6a and a track 19, leading to a clearing cam 20, for the butts 5a. A guard cam 22 engages the notches 6c. At the next feed a cam 23 pushes the butts 6a past the point of a cam 24a leading to a clearing cam 26 while the butts 5a pass along an idle truck 24. In a modification, the butts approach the clearing 'cam 11, Fig. 8, at one feeder, at a common level 39 above the point 40 of the clearing cam 11. The long butts 3a are engaged by a cam 41 which passes them into an idle track, while the short butts 4a pass over the cam 11 and knit. A guard cam 43 prevents the short butt needles from dropping. At the next feed the short butts remain down and the long butts are raised on a cam 44 so as to pass over a clearing cam 13. When the. arrangements described above are employed in cylinder or dial only. the dial or cylinder may carry two sets of needles, operated as described in Specification 20409/08.
