[Class 74 (ii)] A needle 28, 28 Figs. 1 and 3, and a spreader or transfer bar 29, 29<1> are slidably mounted in each needle slot. The spreader has a yarn engaging shoulder 40, which can be aligned with the needle shoulder 31, a prong or hook 39 riding in a needle groove 32, and a wedge shaped cam 42, which enters a needle slot 35. Butts 38, 41 on the needle and spreader are so shaped that either or both may be raised by cams to the positions shown in Fig. 3, raising of the spreader relatively to the needle causing their ends to separate, owing to the cam 42 leaving the slot 35. The separating cam may be provided on the needle, the spreader having a co-operating slot, or both may have cams 55, 57, Fig. 12, the spreading of the ends of the needle and spreader enlarging the loop 62 ready for transfer for example from a dial to a cylinder needle. The needles may be of the latch or bearded type. The advance of the spreader may be limited by a cam 25, Fig. 1. The needle slots may be of uniform width, the spreader and needle bending equally, or as shown in Fig. 12 the slots may be of increased width at their upper ends the spreader only bending, necessitating the dial needles being offset relatively to the cylinder needles. Means are described for selectively advancing cylinder needles and spreaders. In order that certain spreaders may be advanced and others retarded, their butts may be replaced by pivoted members 85, Fig. 19, having its points 86, 87 operated by pattern mechanism. In modifications described, a needle 92, Fig. 20, and its spreader 91 are placed edgewise in the same narrow slot, separation of their upper ends being caused by cam surfaces 128, 132 riding up a tapered slope 96 on the needle. In another - modification described, spreading is caused by the engagement of a cam 107, Fig. 24, on the spreader with a shoulder 110 on the cylinder, the slots of which are shaped as shown. Yarn feeding. A yarn feed is movable into positions 118, 120, Fig. 25, to feed yarn to the cylinder or dial needles when these are fully advanced or to a position 119 to feed yarn to either when partly advanced as at H.
