Abstract

909,036. Knitting - machines. SESSA-MORETTA, M. June 12, 1959 [June 14, 1958]. No. 20137/59. Class 74 (2). For each needle of a bearded needle circular machine, there are a separate presser and sinker, both accommodated in a respective common trick in a rim surrounding the needle cylinder. The pressers 13 and sinkers 20 have each one flat face, the beard pressing part 15 and a butt-bearing part 17 of each presser standing proud, as thickenings, from the other face, whilst the other face of each sinker is relieved to provide a thin front part 21; and a presser and a sinker are arranged in each trick in the sinker head, with their flat faces apposed, so that the operative ends of pressers and sinkers are respectively opposite the needle beards and between the needles. The pressers are selected, to press or not to press, by a pin drum 29 or 29<SP>1</SP> acting through blades 25 or 25<SP>1</SP>. In Fig. 7, blade 25<SP>1</SP>, when moving from the rest position (chain line) to the presser actuating position (full line) can pivot about a pin 50 until a second pin 53 bottoms in a notch in the slider. Thus, the operative end of the blade can follow the presser, as the cylinder revolves, and ensure that it shall remain pressed for the necessary minimum period, whilst still remaining sufficiently thin to enable neighbouring pressers to have butts at the same height. The whole slider assembly may be moved to inoperative position by projections 41 on the central control drum 40 and all pressers can then be operated, through their butts 19, by a cam 46. The stitch cams 23, 23a have each a step 24, 24a, which temporarily arrests the descent of the needles, and, at the time of this dwell, the sinkers (which are at other timed advanced) are retracted. Thus, in heel formation, the yarn tensioned between the thread guide and the last of the idled needles 5a, Fig. 11, rides on the top border of the sinker adjacent to that needle, so that, at the point X at which the presser of the first active needle acts, the yarn is safely within the hook of the needle and will not be pinched by the beard tip.
