Abstract

The hydrolysis of solutions of titanium sulphate for the production of titanium hydroxide is effected by adding a titanium solution to another of different concentration or to water and allowing diffusion to take place for several minutes before complete mixing is effected. In an example a paste of titanium sulphate crystals is introduced into twice its volume of boiling water and is maintained at boiling temperature, the mixing being effected after three to five minutes. The hydrolysis is effected in about half-an-hour. In another example a strong solution of titanium sulphate is introduced little by little into half its volume of boiling water and afterwards stirred, the temperature being maintained near the boiling point. The hydrolysis is effected in about an hour. The process may be effected in presence of other substances which it is required to incorporate with the titanium hydroxide for the production of pigments, and such substances may be prepared separately or in the apparatus in which the hydrolysis is effected. The substances mentioned are barium sulphate, calcium sulphate, and silica.
