Abstract
Normal calcium hypochlorite in the form of easily filterable, tetragonal plates is obtained by producing hexagonal crystals of basic calcium hypochlorite in an aqueous medium, separating same, and chlorinating the crystals in the presence of additional water. The basic hypochlorite may be obtained by chlorinating milk of lime, or by adding a liquor containing calcium hypochlorite to milk of lime, followed if desired by chlorination. The liquor remaining after production of the normal hypochlorite may be employed in this latter process. The hexagonal crystals appear to consist of dibasic calcium hypochlorite, and are only produced in the presence of excess lime; their formation is preferably observed microscopically, but other methods of control may be employed.
