Drawing wire. - A drum for a wire-drawing machine is accelerated gradually to reduce the starting strain by braking a handwheel carried by a member of an epicyclic gear train through which the drum is driven, the epicyclic gear being converted into a solid drive when the drum has reached normal speed. The drive shaft 12, Fig. 2, is rigidly connected to a gear 15 engaging with a pinion 20 keyed on a shaft 27 mounted in an arm 16 which is secured to the drawing-drum 10 but is loosely mounted on the gear 15. A pinion 21 keyed on the upper end of the pinion shaft is geared to a pinion 32 rigidly secured to a handwheel 45. The drum is provided with ratchet teeth 40 which may be engaged by a spring- pressed pawl carried by the handwheel and under the control of a handle 46. The wire having been passed through the hole 36 for attachment, the shaft 12 is started and initially drives the handwheel without rotating the drum. On braking the handwheel by hand-pressure, the drum commences to rotate and when speeded up to the speed of the gear 15, the pawl is engaged, thus rendering the drive solid. In a modification, particularly adapted for stringing the dies, the intermediate gear 22, Fig. 4, is formed with ratchet teeth which may be engaged by a pawl 26 fitting over the pinion shaft and having a tail engaged by a vertically slidable handwheel 35. The dies are strung by lowering the handwheel and rotating it by hand before starting the power shaft 12. The dies having been strung, the drum is run up to speed by the handwheel, the shaft 12 is then started and the handwheel raised or entirely removed, thereby allowing the pawl 26 to make a solid drive.
