Drawing wire.-A wire-drawing machine is provided with mechanism whereby the speed of reeling is automatically regulated by the tension in the wire. Duplicate drawing- drums 17 are geared to a shaft 16, which is driven by a motor 13. The drum-shafts 18 are geared to parallel shafts 40, which drive transverse sleeves 45, Fig. 3, through worm gearing enclosed in casings 41. The sleeves are mounted on spindles 52, to which the reeling spools 38 are secured. The drive is transmitted from the sleeves to the reeling spool spindles through friction clutches composed of members 54, 48 having cork &c. inserts. The pressure contact of the clutch members is controlled by a tensioning arm 33, which carries a pulley 32 over which the wire passes. Each clutch member 54 is splined on the spindle 52, and is provided with a thrust-pin engaging a lever 63 controlled by a spring 69, which can be set to regulate the initial pressure between the clutch members by means of a screw-and-nut gear 75. The lever 63 is linked by a lever system to a sleeve 104, Fig. 4, yieldingly connected to a rod 97 by means of a spring 116 seated on an adjustable member 112. The rod 97 is connected to a link 95, which has a fixed pivot, and is actuated by a roller 94 on an extension of the tensioning arm 33. A clock spring connected to the tensioning arm spindle may be set to give a predetermined tension by a pawl 101 and ratchet wheel 100. Should the wire break, the member 112 drops on to a stop 121 and actuates a lever 120, thereby tripping a clutch mechanism and stopping the machine. The wire is guided on to the spool by fingers 34 on an arm 35, which is reciprocated by gearing driven from the main shaft. The course of the wire through the machine is from the supply spools 25 past guide pulleys 26, 27, thence round the drawing-drums, through dies in the holders 23, and round the idle guide sheaves 19, from whence it passes by way of adjustable guide pulleys 30, round the pulleys 32 at the end of the tensioning arms to the reeling-spools 38.
