Hank type. - In machines for mercerizing cotton skeins of the kind having fixed and movable horizontal stretching cylinders, the movable cylinders can be adjusted by hand parallel to themselves to vary their distance from the fixed cylinders and thus adapt the machine for dealing with skeins of different length or to stretch them to a greater or less extent. The movable cylinders are mounted on a shaft 22 carried bv levers 21 connected at each end to horizontal screwed bars 20, 25 pivoted to bell crank levers 17, 26. The screwed bars are operated simultaneously for adjusting the distance between the movable rollers on the shaft 22 and the fixed rollers on the shaft 18 carrying the bell-crank levers 17 by hand wheels 20<1> and chain and sprocket gearing 25<1>, 25<11>. The levers 17 are operated by power driven cams 15 to stretch the fabric during the operation of the machine, the levers 26 being counterweighted at 28 to give a resilient action. The lower ends of the levers 21 have rollers 23 resting on the base of the machine. The fixed rollers on the shaft 18 are driven bv chain gearing to ensure immersion of the hanks in the treating vessels below. The machine is driven by an electric motor 1 through a friction clutch which is thrown out on the completion of the mercerizing operation by a projection on the shaft carrying the cams 15, the clutch being put in to restart the machine by a hand lever.
