Abstract

463,402. Stop-motions for machines for hackling, spreading, and drawing hard fibres. FAIRBAIRN LAWSON COMBE BARBOUR, Ltd., and ANDERSON, J. K. July 26, 1935, No. 21238. [Class 120 (ii)] In a machine for hackling, spreading, and drawing manilla, sisal, and like hard fibres of the type having stop-motions operating on undue separation of the drawing-rollers 8, 8a, Figs. 1 and 2, or when a predetermined length of material has been treated, and also having manual belt-shifting apparatus which can be operated independently thereof, the stopmotions include a sliding shaft 15 and coupling devices operated by a weight 23, or spring action, and a forked lever 14 which spans the shaft 15 to hold it fixed or may be raised therefrom to allow the operation of the stop-motion. The machine comprises a belt-shifter 2 which may be operated by a number of hand levers 3, 3 spaced along shafts 4, 4 which are connected by a rod 5 through a coupling member and stud 6. For automatic operation of the stop-motion levers 9, 9 mounted upon pivots 9 and connected by rods 11, 11 to levers 12, 12 fixed upon a cross-shaft 13, are provided with a pin 10 on each lever which rests upon the shaft 8 of the upper feed or drawing roller 8. The forked lever 14 is carried by the shaft 13 while the shaft 15 is mounted to slide through brackets 16, 16 fixed at 18, 18 to the machine frame, and through which a shaft 17 carrying the belt fork 2 is also adapted to slide. The shafts 15, 17 are coupled by arms 19, 19 and the arm 19 is connected to a chain 20 passing over pulleys 21, 22 and weighted at 23. When the roller 8 is lifted the forked lever 14 is raised through the action of the levers 9, 9; 11, 11; 12, 12 and the weight 23 moves the shaft 15 to the left, Fig. 4, thus operating the shaft 17 to shift the belt, and simultaneously through the extension 7 of one of the levers 3 oscillating the shafts 4, 4 to throw over the hand levers 3, 3. A measuring stop-motion may also be provided comprising gearing 30, Fig. 5, from the roller 8 so that when a predetermined quantity of material has been passed over the roller 8 a pin 31 on the wheel 30 engages a lever 33 loose on the stud 34 and depresses the rod 35 thus causing a lever 36 to operate the fork lever 14. On restarting the machine by re-setting the handle 3 the weight 23 is raised and all parts resume their original positions.
