Description

ec. i6, 3923i l LSMLZQ@ A. CULLANDER ET AL COTTON TRAMPER Filed April 18, 1924 Patented Dec. 16, 1924.
UNITED "STATES PATENT VOFFICE.
COTTON TRAMPER.
Application filed April 18, 1924.-.
To all ywilma 'it may conce/rn:
Be it known that we, ADoLrH CULLANDER and ENoor-I HAGA, citizens of the United States, residing at Belzoni, in the county of Humphreys and State of Mississippi, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cotton Trampers; and we do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art towhich it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to an improvement in cotton trampers and more particularly to the control means for the operating mechanism in such machines.
The objectof theI present invention is to provide an improved and simplified control device by means of which power applied through a belt may be controlled by the shifting of the belt and the corresponding application or release of a brake element through a mechanism of improved and simplified structure lending itself to positive and efficient operation and simple attachment.
Other objects will more particularly appear in the course of the following detailed description.
The invention co-nsists in the novel construction, arrangement and combination of parts as hereinafter more particularly described and claimed.
One sheet of drawings. accompanies this specification as part thereof, in which like reference characters indicate similar parts throughout.
F ig. 1 is an elevation illustrating the present device applied to a cotton tramper, a portion only of the latter device being shown.
Fig. 2 is a plan view of the improved device removed from the machine.
Referring to the drawings 2 indicates a drive shaft of the cotton tramper upon which are mounted a loose pulley 3 and a fixed pulley 3 over which a belt is adapted to pass as in common practice to apply power as desired to shaft 2.
Arranged transversely of the pulleys 3 and 3 and adjacent their periphery is a slidable rod 5 suitably mounted upon the framework 1 of the cotton tramper as by brackets -l and 20. Upon the rod 5 are pivotally mounted spaced lingers 6 6 between which the belt'is adapted to pass and by Serial No. 707,452.
means of which the belt may be shifted as desired on to the fixed or loose pulleys 3-3 To one end of rod 5 is pivotally secured as at 7 a lever 8, which is again pivotally mounted as at 9 to a bracket 10 mounted upon the framework 1.
ri cam member 11 is adjustably secured upon rod 5 as by bolts 12-12, this member 11 being provided with an inclined cam slot 13. A lever 14 is pivoted as by bolt 16 to a lug 15 forming part of bracket 4 and is pivotally connected as by bolt 18 to a brake shoel 19 positioned adjacent the periphery of fixed pulley 3. The other end of lever 1-/1 is slidably secured as by bolt 17 which passes through the cam slot 13 to the cam member 11.
In operation the rocking of lever 8 will operate to shift the belt, for instance, from loose pulley 3 to fixed pulley 3, while at the same time cam member 11 will operate through slot 13 to release brake shoe 19. Conversely the shifting of the belt from fixed pulley 3 to pulley 3 will apply the brake shoe 19 to fixed pulley 3, thus stopping shaft 2.
By adjusting the position of cam member 11 upon the rod 5 by means ,of bolts 12-12 the effective pressure exerted by shoe 19 may be varied as desired.
What we claim is:
1. In a cotton tramper having a drive shaft provided with a fixed and loose pulley, the combination of belt shifting means, brake means, and means operatively associating the belt shifting means and the brake means, comprising a reciprocating member` a pivoted member, one end of the pivoted member associated with the reciprocating member by a part fixed with respectto one of said members, having a slot in clined with respect to the reciprocating member and a lug fixed with respect to the other of said members and operating in said slot.
2. In a cotton ltramper having a drive shaft with fixed and loose pulleys, a reciprocating rod, means for reciprocating the rod, belt engaging fingers mounted on the rod, a cam member mounted on the rod, a lever carrying a brake shoe adapted to engage the fixed pulley, and means carried by the lever to engage the cam element.
3. In a cotton tramper having a drive shaft with fixed and loose pulleys, a reciprocating rod, means for reciprocating the rod,
Cil
belt engaging fingers secured to the rod, a cam member lon"itndinalljv adjustable on the rod, a lever operatively associated with the cam member, and a brake shoe carried by said lever.
4. In a cotton tramper having a drive shaft with fixed and loose pulleys7 a reciprocating rod, means for reciprocating the rod, belt engaging fingers secured on the rod, a member longitudinally adjustable With respect to the rod and having a slot inclined with respect to the aXis of the rod, a lever, a brake shoe pivotalljT mounted upon one end of said lever, and a bolt secured in the other end of the lever and passing` through the inclined slot of the adjustable member.
In testimony Whereoi1 We afiiX our signatures.
