AUTOMATIC STOP FOR MACHINES.
SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 629,883, dated August 1, 1899. Application filed March 4, I898. Renewed June 19, 1899. Serial No. 721,149. (No model.)
My invention has for its object to improve the automatic stop for machines set forth in United States Patent No. 567,435, of September 8, 1896; and it consists in certain peculiarities of construction and combinations of parts hereinafter specified with reference to the accompanying drawings and subsequently claimed. V
Figure 1 of the drawings represents a perspective view of my improved automatic stop mechanism; Fig. 2, a plan view of the same, partly in horizontal section; and Fig. 3, ade-' tail transverse sectional view indicated byline 3 3 in the preceding figure.
Referring by letter to the drawings, A rep-. resents a drive-shaft having a belt-pulley B loose thereon; but instead of a belt-pulley any suitable driver for transmitting rotary motion may be employed. The hub ofthe belt-pulley or driver is provided with an 'an nular groove in which a split frictionrband G is arranged, this band being provided with lateral wedge-lugs b b, that engage corresponding recesses in ends of levers D D, these levers being in pivotal connection with ears 0 of a collar E, fast on another shaft F, in line with the former shaft and having rotation in standards d, rising from a base-plate G, pins 6, extending from one side of said collar, being engaged with ears f of another collar H, fast on said former shaft.
The free ends of the levers D D are in opposition to one conical end of a slide 1, loose on shaft F, and a shifter J, in spanner connection with an annular groove 9 in the slide, is adjustably secured on a rod K,,loose in guides h, that extend upward from the aforesaid base-plate. The other (also conical) end of slide I operates free ends of levers L L, in pivotal connection with ears 2' of a stationary support M,in which the shaft F revolves, the
other ends of these levers being provided with suitable recesses engaged by wedge-in gs j j, extending from a split friction-band N, engaging a collar P, fast on said shaft, it being understoodthat said support is a fixture on the base-plate of the machine, but owing to peculiarity of shape its lower portion is hid in Fig. 1. The latter friction-band is best illustrated in Fig. 3 and is the counterpart of friction-band 0, one of the wedge-lugs of each band being split and the other solid. Therefore the levers D and I. are not absolutelyessential, their utility in the present construction and arrangement of parts being to balance the other levers D L, with which they are paired.
r 'In pivotal connection with one of a pair of standards m, rising from the base-plate G, is
a preferably spring-controlled latch Q for engagement of a notch or in the rod K, and it is preferable to have a hand-pull 19 in connection with the latch.
Fast on shaft F is a Worm R, in mesh with a worm-wheel S, that is rigid on a spindle T, that has rotation in the standards m, and contained within a partly-round flange S of the worm-wheel is a split friction-band U, the extremities of this band being in the form of Wedge-lugs r, that en gage a corresponding recess in a block't, arranged between the parallel straight extremities of the worm-wheel flange. The block i is opposed by a screw u in a lever V, fulcrumedto. the aforesaid flange extremities and extended through the worm-wheel to have working contact with a from the shifter J, whereby movement of the hand-pull p' may be operated to effect lift of latter with rod K in either direction will be communicated to said bell-crank.
Engaging the friction-band U is one end of the hub of a pulley Y, normally loose on spindle T, and fast to the pulley is one end of a flexible hanger 00 for a weight Z of suitable dimensions. Adj ustably secured on the other end of the pulley-hub by means of a setscrew 1 is the ring end 2 of a cam-trip Q for the latch Q above specified. A pin d, extending in from one of the standards m, comes in the path of a peripheral lug c on pulley Y to stop rotation of the latter when under power of weight Z, in flexible connection therewith, and the set of cam-trip Q with relation to the pulley-lug determines the duration of action by a machine to which my automatic stop mechanism is applied.
The automatic stop mechanism above described is especially designed for use in connection with machines for Weaving springwire mattresses; but it may be found applicable to a variety of machines for different purposes.
In practice when the rod K is pulled out to contract spring K and at the same time opcrate shifter J to move the double-cone slide I against the levers D D the friction-band C will be clamped tight on hub of rotary driver B, and thus motion will be imparted to the coupled shafts A F and other parts of the machine embodying the herein-deseribed mechanism. The latch Q engages notch n in rod K to hold the latter in adjusted position, movement of this rod and the shifter J, fast thereon, having operated the bell-crank to move cone W on spindle T in opposition to lever V, whereby depression of block tis had to tighten friction-band U, and thus insure rotation of pulley Y, with the worm-wheel S in mesh with Worm R of shaft F aforesaid. The screw it is adjusted to take up wear and regulate contraction of the friction-band U on the hub of the aforesaid pulley. Rotation of pulley Y causes lift of Weight Z and brings the cam-trip Q into operation against latch Q to disengage the latter from rod K, whereby spring K is free to expand and move said rod in a direction reverse to that previously described. This reverse movement of the rod operates the shifter J to move slide I away from levers D D and against levers L L, whereby the grip of friction-band O is released from pulley B and friction-band N drawn tight on collar P to stop rotation of the latter and shaft F, to which it is secured. At the same time the bell-crank, in connection with cone WV, is operated to slide the latter on the spindle away from leverV, whereby the grip of friction-band U is released from hub of pulley Y, and the power of the descending weight Z operates to rot-ate said pulley in the direction necessary to bring the cam-trip Q to normal position, the pulley-lug 8 coming into the stop d in its path.
At any time it is desirable or necessary the latch Q and stop of the machine.
As previously stated, the automatic stop mechanism is particularly designed for use in connection with spring-wire-mattress-weaving machines, and the setof the cam-trip with relation to the pulley-lug determines the length of wire run by the weaving-machine before the latter is automatically stopped.
The automatically-adj ustable cone W,lever V, clamp-block t, friction-band U, and pulley Y constitute a clutch controlled by the bellcrank cooperative with the aforesaid slideshifter, and there may be considerable variation of this clutch. It is also to be understood that the auxiliary shaft F is practically a continuation of the drive-shaft and that a suitable spring may be utilized in place of the flexible hanger and weight herein set forth.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
