Be it known that I, FREDERICK S. FLon- 'IER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Saginaw. in the county of Saginaw and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Clutch Attachments for Punching and Riveting Machines; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full,.clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to punching, shearing and pressing machines and pertains more particularly to a clutch disengaging device therefor.
The object of the present invention is to provide an improved, simple and reliable clutch disengaging device by means of which the cutting and punching may be made to stop at any desired point in its travel.
/Viththe above and other objects in view,-
the invention consists in .certain novel features of construction and in certain parts, improvements and combinations as will be hereinafter more fully described and pointed out in the claims.
To accomplish above result without making the cam face separate from or adjustable on the clutch on which it is mounted, I have produced my present invention which consists in the devices described and claimed and the equivalents thereof.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation of a power punch with my improvement attached; Fig. 2 is an enlarged side view of the cam;.Fig. 3 is a front View of the cam;
Figs. 4 and 5 are respectively a top plan view and a side view of the cam-disengaging shoe or rollerand one form of device by which it may be adjusted to produce the desired control of the punching tool. v
1 represents the frame of a punch and 2 the ordinary punching tool mounted in the frame in the usual manner and actuated byv means of the usual ram and drive shaft 3.
A drive gears is loosely mounted on the shaft, being operated by a motor 5 or any other suitable source of power. 6 is a clutch member fixed to the drive gear and loosely revoluble on the shaft 3. The second memher 7 of the clutch is mounted on the shaft 3 but is not revoluble on the shaft, being Specification of Letters Patent.

or revoluble shoe, such as roller 9, which en-- gages the helical cam face 8 of the cam. The cam is preferably formed integral with clutch member 7 and extends part way or clear arouhd the circumference, as may be required.
While I, haveillustrated and now proceed to describe one specific embodiment of my invention, 1 do not desire to confine myself to the particular construction shown, as various modifications in arrangement of arts and details of construction may be employed without departing from the spirit of my invention.
In the form shown, the shoe or roller 9 is loosely mounted on a pintle 10 which passes through a yoke 11. This yoke is mounted on a pair of threaded bolts 12, 12, and is clamped in any desired adjusted position along these bolts by means of set nuts 13. The bolts are fixed at one end to a rocking block 14 which is mounted on rock shaft 15. A lever 16 is fixed to the shaft and when down or up, lifts shoe 9 clear of the cam or replaces it. Lever 16 may be oper-' ated by a link 17 and suitable foot treadle 18, or it may be operated directly by hand. Shoe 9 being in place as shown, and having beenset at a predetermined position on bolts 12, the clutch may be thrown out of action in the following. manner. Cam 8 having been turned by gear 4 until its face engages shoe 9, further rotation of gear 4 causes'the Shoe to bear along the inclined face of the. cam and to force-the cam and its clutch member out of gear, thereby stopping the shaft 3 and the punching tool 2 in the desired position[ To change the position of stopping of tool 2 to accommodate plates of different thicknesses, it is only necessary to move shoe 9 out or in as the case may be, in a direction lengthwise the main shaft, along bolts 12, by means of the look nuts 13. If moved out, that is, toward the right in Fig. 1, the shoe will engage the cam face 8 at. a later point in the revolution of the gear and will consequently throw the clutch out at a later point in the revolution of the shaft, so that the punching tool 2 will stop at a point later in its travel. Similarly, adjusting shoe 9 to the left along bolts 12 will stop punching tool 2 at an earlier point in its travel, to suit thicker metal.
It will be noted that with my improved construction the clutch and cam may be made in a single piece and that to produce the desiredadj ustment of the punching tool, adjustment of the helical cam face relative to the clutch is not required. By merely shifting the location of roller 9 by means of the lock nuts 13, the travel of the punch may be changed without stopping the machine.
Having described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a clutch attachment for punching and other machines, the combination with a main shaft and a clutch member loosely mounted thereon, of a clutching member slidably mounted on said shaft, a spring to normally' cause the engagement of the clutch, said clutching member being provided with a helical circumferential cam having a side working face; removable means adapted to engage said cam face at a predetermined point along its face, said cam face in its travel adapted to disengage said clutching member from the aforesaid loosely mounted clutch member.
2. In a clutch-disengaging device for punching machines, the combination with a main shaft and a two-part clutch thereof, one member of said clutch slidably mounted upon said shaft and provided with a helical circumferential cam, of a spring to normally cause the engagement of the clutch, a rocking element adapted to be manually actuated, a shoe carried by said rocking element adapted to engage the face of said cam, and means for longitudinally adjusting said shoe to regulate the timing of the action of said cam.
3. In a clutch-disengaging device for punching machines, the combination with a main shaft and a two-part clutch thereof,
one member of said clutch member slidably mounted upon said shaft and provided with a helical circumferential cam, of a spring to normally cause the engagement of the clutch, a rocking element pivoted adiacent said sliding clutch member, means carried by said rocking element adapted to support a roller shoe, and means adapted to be actuated for either engaging or disengaging said roller shoe with the face of said cam,
and means for longitudinally adjusting said shoe supporting means to regulate the timing of the action of said cam.
4. In a clutch attachment for punching and other machines, the combination with the main shaft and a clutch-member loosely mounted thereon, of a clutching member slidably mounted on said shaft, a spring to normally cause the engagement of the clutch, said clutching member being provided with a helical circumferential cam having a side working face, rocking means arranged adjacent the sliding clutch member, means for actuating said rocking means adjustable supporting means carried by said rocking means, a shoe supported by said adjustable supporting means, said shoe adapted to engage the face of said cam to regulate the timing of the action of said C3111.
5. In a clutch attachment for punching and other machines, the combination with a main shaft and a clutch member loosely mounted thereon, of a clutching member slidably mounted on said shaft, a spring to normally cause the engagement of the clutch, said clutching member being pro- Vided with a helical circumferential cam having a side working face, a shoe adapted to engage the face of said cam, a yoke for supporting said shoe, means for supporting said yoke to permit adjustment of said shoe in a direction lengthwise of the main shaft, to regulate the timing of the action of said cam and means for actuating said yokesupporting means.
