To all whom it may concern Be it known that l, iVAL'rnu P. Ossooo, a citizen of the United States and resident 3? Malden, county of ll liddleses, Common 5 wealth of Massachusetts, have invented an improvement in Stop Mechanisms of Eur bossing and like Machines, of which the tollowing description, in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specification, W like characters on the drawings representing like parts in each of the several views.
This invention relates to stop mechanisms for disconnecting automatically the power drive in machines, and while having other and more general fields of usefulness is well adapted and designed for use in embossing and like machines wherein a power operated presser ram or movable dieis moved up to press the material against a relatively fixed ln machines of this kind it is desirable to have the connections of the movable ram under the control of the operator so that the rain may be either caused to dwell in position to press the material against the fixed die, or be instantly withdrawn by a continuing movement of the driving mechanism after an operative impression according to the control by the operator as dictated by the requirements of the work in hand. A prime object of the invention is to provide a simple and reliable mechanism preferably manually controlled as by a treadle device whereby the stop mechanism without other manipulation than the necessary 7 and down movements of the treadle, is under the full control of the operator to impart ram movements that will either continue to press the material long as de sired, or instantly release the same and re tract the ram, at will. To this end 1 pro-' vide a device that by a downward movement of the treadle sets in motion the ram for a movement that if the treadle is at once released will result in a single complete cycle 5 of movement bringing; the ram upi into pressing contact with a tired die and then withdraw it to initial position, but so constituted that if the treadle be held down instead of at once released, the ram will be stopped midway of its cycle, i. e., while held in pressing contact with the material against the fixed die. The shaft 15 receives rotation from a driving wheel 17, this wheel being loosely mounted on a projecting end of said shaft vand being intermittently clutched thereto and disconnected therefrom by the stop mechanism now to be described. The hub 17? of this wheel is equipped with a series shown as four in number of short projections l7 constituting clutch abutments and adapted to be engaged by asliding pin 18 fitted in a sleeve hub 19 fixed to the shaft15 adjacent the wheel hub 17. The pin 18 is yieldingly pressed endwise to cause it to engage with the clutch. projections 17 by a spring 20 housed in the hub 19, and it has a lateral projection or prong 21 through which it is controlled by cam or wedge pieces 22, 23 which are carried in spaced apart relation on a yoke bar 24. The yoke bar 24 is slidably guided for limited horizontal movement on pins 25 set into the supporting frame, the yoke bar for this purpose having slotted ends 26 in'which said pins are slidably fitted. The cam pieces 22, 23 are thus mounted oppositely with respect to the revolving movement of the projection 21, and they are so spaced with reference to said projection, that when the bar at is moved to position either of them in the path of said projection, the other hereof will be out of the path of said projection as indicated with respect to the cam piece 22 in dotted lines in Fig. 3. The bar 24; is controlled as to its sliding movement by a lever 27 which is pivoted to the pin 25 and formed at its inner end with an inclined slot 28 in which engages a pin 29 carried by the bar 24. The outer end of the lever 27 has pivoted thereto a rod 30 which may be connected with suitable manual operating means such as a treadle, and is normally held at an upper limit of movement by suitable constantly acting yielding means shown as a tension spring 31 anchored to the frame work and engaged with said rod. Thus the bar 24 is normally held by the spring 31 in position so that the cam piece 23 will en gage the finger 21 when it comes opposite thereto to withdraw the pin 18 and disconnect the shaft 15 from the driving wheel 17, this being the condition of rest. To operate the machine the treadle rod 30 is depressed thus moving the bar 24 to the right as seen in Fig. 3 and disengaging the cam piece 23 from the finger 21 thus ermitting the pin 18 to move outward an the clutch to become operative. Thereupon the ram 12 receives an operative movement which if the treadle is held down will terminate when the finger 21 comes against the cam piece 22 which will then be in position to engage the same,thus stopping the ram while it is in pressing engagement with the material against the fixed die 11. If however the treadle after being depressed is at once released the bar 24: will be again shifted to the left by the spring 31 before the finger 21 reaches the cam piece 22 and hence the shaft 15 will be permitted to make a complete revolution before the clutch is again thrown out by the cam piece 23 thus returning the ram to open position. free movement of the shaft 15, and insuring proper engagement of the clutch teeth, as well as the stopping of the shaft at the correct point without overthrow, the inner end of the shaft preferably has fixed thereto a brake disc 32 which'is frictionally engaged by a brake shoe 33 adjustably held pressed thereagainst by a set screw 34 adjusted through a lug extending from the framework. In this way the operator is enabled to cause the machine to operate either for maintaining the ram in pressing engagement with the material as long as he may desire by merely holding down the treadle, or he may cause it to operate to press the material and then return by a continuous movement to open position, by pressing the treadle down and at once releasing it, thus giving him full control of the ram movements and without the introduction of any additional. controlling devices or members whatsoever. The described means whereby the ram may be held in pressing engagement with the fixed die 11 as long as desired, is of special value and importance in an embossing machine of the general type where-- in the embossing or other impression is accomplished with the use of heat, as for example as shown in my prior Patent No. 1,252,299 patented January 1, 1918, since in this way the action of the heat may be uti lized to a greater or less extent as conditions may require. While the invention is herein shown as embodied in an embossing machine it will be understood that the essential principles of the stop movement de-' reference being had to the appended claims rather than to the foregoing description to indicate the scope of the invention. 7
Having described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. Apparatus of the kind described, comprising power driving means, driven operative means, a clutch interposed between said drivin means and driven means, and a stop motion for controlling said clutch having a manual governing device, said stop motion embodying spaced apart members with means for moving the same into and out of operative position with respect to said clutch, means for normally holdingone of said members in operative position with the other of said members in inoperative position, said manual governing device having connections for moving the first named mem her to inoperative position, and the last named member to operative position, the last named member being located to engage the clutch to cause said driven means to stop midway of its cycle of movement, and the first named member being located so as to permit a full operative cycle of movement of said driven means.
2, Apparatus of the kind described, comprising a rain mounted for reciprocation into and away from an operative position, driving means therefor including a clutch connection, and a stop motion device embodying two spaced apart members mounted for movement to a position for engaging selectively said clutch connection to render the same inoperative, means normally holding one of said members in operative position with the other of said members in inoperative position, and manually operated means for movin saidmembers so that the first named mem er is in inoperative position, and the last named member is in operative position, the location of said members with respect to said clutch connection being such that when the first named member is in operative position, a full operative cycle of said ram is permitted, while when the last named member is in operative position, the ram is disconnected after a half cycle of movement.
3. Apparatus of the kind described comprising a driven member mounted for an operative cycle of movement, driving means therefor having a clutch connection to said treadle is released, so that a full operative movement of said driven member 1s permitted, the range of movement of said shifter bar being such that when said treadle is held depressed the second of said cam faces is in position to engage said projection to disconnect said clutch upon a partial rotation only thereof to cause said driven member to stop intermediate its cycle of movement.
